Antibiotic resistance
We want to maintain the effectiveness of our antibiotics, for humans and animals. That is why we at the BVL are working intensively on the topic of "antibiotic resistance".
The English website on Veterinary medicines is under construction. Please refer to the German website in case desired information cannot be found here.
Antibiotic resistance ...
Terms and contexts
On this first page, we would like to give you an overview of the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. To do this, we will first explain some important terms and contexts.
... in pets and hobby animals
If your animal is ill, your veterinarian must find out whether a bacterial infection is present and what kind of bacterium causes it. An antibiogram is used to determine the resistance or sensitivity of a bacterial pathogen.
... in food-producing animals
Healthy animals do not need antibiotics. Prevention is therefore important if as few antibiotics as possible are to be used in animal husbandry. Within the EU, the use of growth promoters is prohibited.
... in the environment
Veterinary medicinal product must be disposed of safely and must not enter wastewater. Our sewage treatment plants are not designed to remove pharmaceutical residues.
…limitation programmes and measures
A strategy to limit antibiotic resistance must encompass all affected areas - humans, animals and the environment. Antibiotic resistances know no borders. They are spread worldwide through global trade and tourism.
