Restricting trade with hazardous waste and ensuring that waste is disposed of correctly

ioThe aim of the Convention is to minimise cross-border transfers of toxic waste, to ensure that such waste is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, if possible in the same place it is produced and to generally reduce the amount of toxic waste produced. In order to achieve these aims, the transport of toxic waste from one country to another is controlled to prevent illegal transport. The Convention was agreed on in 1989 in Basel and entered into force in 1992. Today, there are almost 160 Parties to the Convention, including the European Union.
