Plant protection products
Critically examined - plant protection products
The BVL is responsible for authorising plant protection products in Germany. In this process, the BVL is responsible for risk management, i.e. for authorisation decisions and administrative measures to protect both humans and the environment. Furthermore, the BVL acts as the national coordination point in the European cooperation to evaluate active substances in plant protection products and to determine maximum residue levels. It lists plant resistance improvers and adjuvants which are permitted in Germany.
Many topics, one goal
Co-formulants and formulation chemistry
The composition of a plant protection product from active substances and co-formulants is called "formulation". The formulation chemistry aims at finding a composition which imparts desired properties to the plant protection product.
Active substances
In the authorisation procedure the chemical and physical properties of the active substances are assessed. Particular attention is payed to impurities of active substances.
Analytics of plant protection products
The active substances and relevant impurities in plant protection products must be analytically determinable in order to be able to monitor product quality for manufacturing and trading.
Laboratory for formulation chemistry
The BVL maintains at its location in Braunschweig a laboratory for formulation chemistry, where plant protection products can be analysed regarding their composition and physical and chemical properties.
