In the area of health related consumer protection the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) aims to improve the coordination between the Federal Government and the Federal States (Bundesländer), to make the communication of risks more transparent and to manage risks before they turn into crises.

The BVL coordinates control programmes about foodstuffs on the market – in supermarkets, any other retail, or traded in the internet.

The BVL authorises plant protection products, veterinary drugs, and genetically modified organisms – provided they are harmless to the health of humans, animals, and our environment.

We are communicating matters pertaining to health protection of consumers in the fields of foodstuffs, feeding stuffs, consumer goods, plant protection products, animal drugs, and genetic engineering.

Export affairs

The BVL functions as a consultant and co-ordinating office in affairs related to the export of live animals, animal products and feed products, as regards food and feed safety, animal diseases, and animal welfare.

G@ZIELT: Safe shopping on the internet

The BVL houses the Laenders’ joint central unit for Control of internet trade in products covered by the Food and Feed Code and tobacco products. The short name is G@ZIELT.
