Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument (TAIEX)

EU programme for short-term, intermittent measures to support and strengthen the administration of countries outside the EU such as (potential) EU accession candidates or countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy.

What is TAIEX?

The Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument (TAIEX) is an instrument of the European Union (EU) for strengthening the institutions for short-term assistance measures. TAIEX measures, rather like twinning projects, are primarily designed to align potential member states with EU legislation.

A TAIEX measure usually involves deploying experts in the beneficiary authority, a joint workshop or a study visit by representatives from EU authorities and takes from two to five days. It can also be used to prepare for twinning projects and follow up on them.

Who takes part?

Target countries for TAIEX projects include EU accession candidates, potential EU accession candidates and countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy.

Engagement of the BVL

The BVL is involved in numerous TAIEX initiatives. For example, the BVL has already worked with partner authorities in Albania, Egypt, North Macedonia, Turkey, the Republic of Moldova and Morocco.

For example, in 2019 a TAIEX expert was deployed to the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The goal was to move Albania, as a potential EU accession candidate, closer to EU standards for health-related consumer protection. The deployment was designed jointly by the BVL and BfR: BfR statement.
